The shift from bank to wallet and self-custody.

The name Nuri has existed since May 2021. Before that, the company was called Bitwala. Bitwala was founded in Berlin in 2014 and launched in October 2015 as a Bitcoin service for transfers. From late 2018 it offered a German bank account with a Bitcoin wallet, through Solarisbank. On 19 May 2021, Bitwala became Nuri.

The old Nuri was a crypto bank without its own banking licence. The euro accounts were held at Solarisbank. Bitcoin and ether were held by Solaris Digital Assets. Anyone who wanted could use a Vault and hold the keys themselves. And there was the Bitcoin interest account. There, customers' Bitcoin went to Celsius, a US crypto lender.

On 13 June 2022, Celsius stopped all withdrawals. 14,746 Nuri customers were affected, with around 1,000 Bitcoin in total. That was less than 5 percent of the money on the platform. Two thirds of these customers had less than 100 euros in the interest account. After the US proceedings, they got back around 0.26 Bitcoin per Bitcoin in January 2024.

Everyone else was not affected by Celsius. Euro accounts, crypto wallets and Vaults stayed accessible. Still, on 9 August 2022, Nuri GmbH filed for insolvency. There was no fresh capital, and no buyer was found. In October 2022, Nuri announced it would close. Until 18 December 2022, all customers could withdraw their money.

The problem was not the technology. The problem was who holds the money. In the interest account, the Bitcoin sat with Celsius. When Celsius shut down, neither the customer nor Nuri could get it back. Owners became creditors. And when Nuri itself ran out of money, every customer had to move their money elsewhere.

Bitwala relaunched in November 2023 as a separate company, together with Striga. In January 2025, Bitwala announced that the Nuri brand and nuri.com were moving to new owners. Anyone who had a Vault with the old Nuri can reach it again through the Bitwala app, not through us.

Today's Nuri is a new company with a new team. Founded by Emin Mahrt, with people from the Berlin Bitcoin scene.

Today Nuri is a wallet, not a bank. Bitcoin and your euros and dollars as stablecoins sit in a wallet you open with a passkey. Face ID or a fingerprint is enough. Your keys come from your passkey. Nuri cannot move anything without you.

That is why the old failure no longer exists. Back then, the bank or its partner held the money. When the partner went bust, the money was locked. Today your money sits on the blockchain, under your key. If Nuri were gone tomorrow, you could still reach your money. The tool for that is public on GitHub and runs offline on your computer.

Card and IBAN are optional. They come from regulated partners. Everything else stays with you. Like cash, just digital.
